Michelin Heritage Calendar – July

July 1940 – During WWII links with Michelin head office in Clermont-Ferrand, France were lost and the British operation had to adapt to functioning in isolation. New technical departments managing secret processes were established at Stoke to ensure continued production in the UK. Other changes were 12 hour shifts, seven day weeks for all departments and more women on the factory including working night shifts for the first time (‘inconvenience allowance’ of 2d per hour – that’s less than 1p today!).
