Welcome to this ‘First Look’ at the archives of Michelin Tyre Public Limited Company – that’s the United Kingdom’s branch of the global tyre manufacturer and brand! Here we’d like to share with you some moments in time that our team of volunteers are coming across as they excitedly delve into the treasure trove of Michelin archive boxes.
After its incorporation in London, in 1905, Michelin Tyre Company Limited’s first factory was built in 1927, in Stoke-on-Trent. Celebrating its ninety year anniversary this year, this well-known factory in Campbell Road, having evolved over the decades, continues to produce tyres today at this original site. From the early days Michelin forged good relations with its local populations. This spirit of involvement has since spread to many other communities across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as Michelin UK progressively developed other factories, sales offices and warehouses.
As a consequence, many people find they have an association with the company and oftentimes recall fond memories of personal, family or professional associations. For anyone who feels such a connection, first hand or via a family member, these images may bring back memories of : tyre making, distribution, advertising, selling; or simply general factory life. On the other hand, you may just be intrigued by these wonderful old photographs. Either way, we hope you enjoy them!
This initial selection of photographs gives you an insight into just a few aspects of Michelin life. We hope to add more memories from Michelin’s past and progress news about the materials available to view at the City Archive’s Reading Room as time goes by, and welcome any associated memories or information that visitors to our site can add. Get in touch via our Contact Us page to share what you remember.
